SRV to build a service block in the Kruunuvuorenranta district of Helsinki – aiming to complete construction of a school and day care centre in summer 2027
SRV and the City of Helsinki have signed an agreement on the construction of a service block in Kruunuvuorenranta. The agreement will be executed as a project management contract with a total value to SRV of approximately EUR 60 million. The project will be entered to SRV’s order backlog as it progresses. This project will further solidify the company’s leading position in collaborative contracting.
The City of Helsinki selected SRV to execute the project management contract in March 2024. However, due to an appeal concerning street construction in the area and a small stream discovered nearby, the building start was delayed from the planned schedule. According to the revised schedule, construction of the service block should begin in spring 2025, and the new school and day care centre should be completed in summer 2027, according to the target schedule.
The Kruunuvuorenranta service block will provide premises for primary and lower secondary schools teaching in Finnish and Swedish, as well as a day care centre, youth facilities and support premises for a playground. The primary and lower secondary school will welcome 700 pupils learning in Finnish from grades 1 to 9, 200 pupils learning in Swedish from grades 1 to 6, and 50 preschoolers, for a total of 950 children. The premises will be built from functional entities, i.e., blocks. Youth Helsinki will gain new meeting and hobby facilities, which will also serve residents and organisational activities. Sports facilities and commercial services are also planned near the school, although the construction schedule for these is not yet known.
“We are delighted that the Kruunuvuorenranta service block is advancing from the procurement decision in the spring to the actual agreement phase, and we can start driving this important project towards implementation. The collaborative project management model is ideal for this project: we will work together to find the best solutions to implement the project sustainably, taking into account the environment, safety and efficiency. We will contribute our substantial expertise in developing and building lifecycle-wise learning environments throughout Finland. Our most recent projects in the Helsinki metropolitan area include Matinkylä Upper Secondary School, the Upper Secondary School of Natural Sciences in Kumpula, and the Finnish-Russian School in Kaarela,” says Marko Räisänen, Unit Director, Business Premises in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, at SRV.
The Kruunuvuorenranta service block will be built according to the taxonomy for sustainable activities, taking into account waste sorting and recycling and climate change preparedness. The project’s design and implementation will be guided by the ecologically sustainable construction targets set for the City of Helsinki’s service building projects, which aim for long-lasting, low-carbon construction that considers the circular economy and the value of nature on the plot. The energy-efficient building will be rated in energy class A and use a renewable geothermal solution for its heating and cooling energy. In addition, a solar power system on the roof of the building will cover some of the building’s electricity consumption.
“The new school and day care centre have been eagerly anticipated in the area. It is great that we can now proceed with the project and start construction next year,” says Arto Manninen, Project Manager at the City of Helsinki.
The total gross floor area of the service block is approximately 17,000 gross square metres. The project is based on an architectural competition for the design of the service block. The competition was held in 2020, and the winner was Huttunen-Lipasti Architects Ltd.
